Shaam-e-ghazal

Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi (CSA) organized Shaam-e-ghazal, an evening of Hindi, Punjabi and Urdu poetry, at the UBS Auditorium in Panjab University.

The Chief Guest at the occasion was Shri Ram Niwas, Home Secretary, Chandigarh Administration, who himself is a poet of note and also a commendable singer.

The following well-known poets of the region were invited: Mehak Bharati, Nirmal Dutt, Raminder Jakhu, Sultan Anjum, RD SharmaTaseer, and Vijay Vivek. They regaled the audience for almost two hours, reciting or singing with their verses.

The Chief Guest, Shri Ram Niwas, was also persuaded to sing some of his verses, much to the delight of the audience.

The event was compered by Shri Madhav Kaushik, himself a renowned award-winning poet. He introduced the invited poets, gave a brief background to their achievements, and enlivened the programme with his witty comments. On popular demand he also recited some of his ghazals.

The Chairperson of the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi, Prof Manju Jaidka, gave a brief overview of the work being done by the Akademi and informed the audience that a similar evening of English Poetry and Fiction would be organized in the first half of November.
