CELEBRATING WOMEN'S LITERATURE

CELEBRATING WOMEN'S LITERATURE
20-21 November 2010

Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi has been working assiduously to promote the literary and cultural scene in the city. Over the last two years and more it has organized literary events with remarkable regularity, involving the residents of City Beautiful in seminars and symposia, book launches and lectures, discussions and talks. The coming fortnight promises to be a very busy one for the Akademi.

On 20th November, Shri Pradip Mehra, Adviser to the Administrator, inaugurated a 2-day event "Celebrating Women's Literature" at the UT Guest House. The invited speakers included well-known names from the city and some speakers from Delhi. Prof Manju Jaidka, Chairperson, CSA, reminded the gathering that the Akademi was observing the birth anniversary of Late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and felt the need to focus on women's writing which is generally ignored in a patriarchal world. Mr Mehra, in his opening remarks, spoke of the contribution of women to world literature and the fact that some of them managed to reach great heights of fame.

The first speaker of the day was Dr Anirudh Joshi, Professor of Sanskrit who retired from Panjab University, Chandigarh. He spoke on "Women in Sanskrit Literature" and held the audience riveted with his wide-ranging references to classical Indian literature.

The well-known theatre person, Rani Balbir Kaur, speaking on "Women Behind the Footlights" highlighted the contribution of leading women associated with the stage. She also spoke of her personal experience, theoretical and practical, in the field of performing arts.

The post-lunch session comprised a talk on "Diasporic women writers from India" by Dr Manpreet Kaur and on "Women in Indian Cinema" by Vivek Sachdeva, both Associate Professors from IPU, Delhi. Finally, the poet Nitoo Das, who hails from Assam but is now settled in Delhi, read her work and concluded the day's events.

On 21st Nov, the second day of the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi's event "Celebrating Women's Literature" the speakers were Prof SS Noor, the Vice-Chairman of the National Sahitya Akademi, Punjabi writers Dr Vanita and Paul Kaur, and Dr Sunita Jain - creative writer in Hindi. They spoke of their work and read some of their poems. Ms Anu Chatrath, Mayor, presided over the inaugural session and addressed the gathering.

The Mayor, Ms Chatrath, expressed her appreciation of the good work that the city's Sahitya Akademi has been doing over the last couple of years and assured the gathering that the Municipal corporation would do its best to support the Akademi's activities.

Prof S.S. Noor, in his survey of Women's contribution to Literature, spoke eloquently on Punjabi poetry and also touched upon women writers from other parts of the country, notably those writing in Telugu, Kannada and Marathi. In particular, he focused on women's writing from the North-Eastern states, drawing attention to recent Penguin collection of their works. Prof Noor is one of the leading poet-critics of today and he has done a sizable work in the field of translation, too. Backed by his long years of experience, he spoke of the distinction between good poetry and bad poetry, asserting that among Punjabi poets no one has equalled the stature of Amrita Pritam.

Dr Sunita Jain began her career teaching English to college-students, wrote poetry in English in the early years but moved on to Hindi Poetry. for her the Chandigarh visit was a nostalgic homecoming of sorts and she recited several poems suited to the present experience.

Dr. Vanita'a presentation was a balance between the emotional and the intellectual. She has been teaching and writing in Punjabi and her works combines theory with practice. Reading from her poems, she effectively presented various facets of women's poetry.

Paul Kaur, who began her poetic career while still a child, writes Punjabi poetry, too and teaches in Ambala. Hers is powerful poetry that does not believe in defeatism or submission. Her idiom and delivery was thus different from the gentle persuasiveness of Vanita or the emotional appeal of Sunita Jain's work.

The secretary of the CSA, Madhav Kaushik, ably compered the event which was followed by an animated discussion by the interested audience which comprised well-known names like N.S. Rattan, V. Mehndiratta, Gulzar Sandhu, Indu Bali, and others.

The event closed with a vote of thanks from the Chairperson of the Akademi, Manju Jaidka, and with a sincere promise from S.S. Noor that the national Sahitya akademi would take a keen interest in the literary activities of Chandigarh hosted by the CSA.

It may be noted that the Akademi's popularity has increased manifold. Its Facebook and Blog are regularly visited and reports and pictures of all events are posted almost immediately.

Forthcoming events of CSA include a Quiz on Science Fiction and a competition of Shair-o-shayari, both at the Chandigarh Carnival, 26th and 27th November 2010. More details are available on FB and Blog. For further inquiries, those interested may email sahitakad2008@gmail.com

Although this event is dedicated to Women's Writing, the involvement of men is significant because, as the CSA Chairperson pointed out, in a complete world men cannot be excluded; there has to be a mutual harmony and cooperation between the genders.

Literary Miscellany

Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi held a "Literary Miscellany" today at the UT Guest House, bringing together three different types of events: an academic lecture, two book launches and a presentation on Script-writing.

The main speaker of the day was Prof Dieter Riemenschneider, visiting from Germany. He spoke on the Aesthetics of Raja Rao, bringing together literature, landscape, the printed text and the visual world together with a power point presentation. Prof Schneider is not new to Chandigarh. In fact he has taught at the German Department of Panjab University, almost four decades ago. Since then he has made several trips to India as visiting professor to various universities. He is passionate about the work of Raja Rao, one of the BIG Three in Indian writing in English, along with RK Narayan and Mulk Raj Anand.

The function also saw the launch of two books by city writers. Amarjit Sidhu, whose book "No Way Home" was launched today, has spent his growing years in Chandigarh and is an alumnus of PanjabUniversity. He has been writing poetry since his college days. After his postgraduation he moved to Canada but for the last few decades he has been dividing his time between Chandigarh and Toronto. Amarjit was introduced by Prof Meera Malik who spoke about his work before the author read an excerpt from his book.

Madhav Kaushik, the other writer who was given the platform today, is the Secretary of Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi. in this capacity he has been instrumental in the promotion of of local talent, organizing book launches and meetings with writers. Today, his contribution to literature was acknowledged by the chairperson, Prof Manju Jaidka, who spoke of the twenty-one books that Kaushik has penned and the numerous honours and awards he has received, including the recent Maha Kavi Surdas Samman by the Haryana Sahitya Akademi. Kaushik also read portions from his work.

The final item in the Miscellany today was a talk-cum-presentation on Script-writing by Dr Indubala Singh who teaches English in Govt Colllege and also has expertise in cinema studies, having done her PhD on cinematic adaptations of literary texts. Dr Indubala has been in the news for having made a few feature films and documentaries, including a very moving feature on the handicapped girl Gudiya who, despite all hurdles, insists on living a self-supporting life with dignity. Indubala showed clips from her recent works.

CHANDIGARH WRITERS MEET

CHANDIGARH WRITERS MEET. 26 June 2010

Ek sham lekhakon ke naam!

Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi held a “Lekhak Milni” this evening, bringing together all the writers listed in its online Directory. This was an experiment which aimed at a healthy interaction within the writers’ community. The response it evoked was overwhelming. Approximately a hundred writers turned up. Among the senior writers was Prof V Mehndiratta, a former Chairman of the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi. Also present was Dr Harnam Singh Shan, a Founding member of the Akademi. The presence of these two veterans added a vintage grace and dignity to the occasion.

Madhav Kaushik, secretary of CSA, welcomed all the writers. He explained that the akademi’s role is to reach out to the public through the promotion of literature. Accordingly, the CSA has been engaged in publications, in giving awards of recognition, and in the promotion of literature in the city. The immediate reason for this gathering, he said, was the announcement of the online Writers Directory. Proofs of the Directory were presented to the gathering and they were asked to make corrections and additions, as required, to their details. Manju Jaidka, Chairperson, CSA, requested all the writers to stay tuned to CSA activities through the internet, the blog and Facebook. She briefly outlined the proposed events of the coming year and appealed for the continued support of the people of the city.

Dr Mehndiratta was all praise for the achievements of the CSA; in particular, he appreciated its outreach into a much wider section of the society than before. Dr HS Shan also expressed his pleasure at the Akademi’s contribution towards the promotion of literature and culture. He was satisfied that the work he had begun with Dr KL Zakir many years ago was being carried on creditably by the akademi today.

All the writers present were given an opportunity to say a few words about themselves and their works. Dr DS Gupt, Vice-Chairman, brought the evening to a close with a formal vote of thanks.

ANNUAL ROUND-UP - MAY 2010

27 MAY 2010

CHANDIGARH SAHITYA AKADEMI

ANNUAL ROUND-UP AND HASYA KAVI SAMMELAN

27 MAY 2010

Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi (CSA) is now a well-known name in the city. It has made its presence felt through its regular programmes – book launches, publications, awards, workshops, panel discussions, seminars, national / international conferences and, above all the First Chandigarh LitFest held in February this year. In addition to regular snail-mail invitations, it keeps its followers abreast of its activities through the internet, using email, a blog, and the Facebook. There is even a Chandigarh Writers’ Directory that is now available on its blog. There is no denying that the Akademi has made history; it has made a difference to the intellectual and cultural ambience of Chandigarh, giving the city a place on the national and even international literary map. This was evident in the Annual Round-Up of the CSA held this evening.

The Chairperson, Prof Manju Jaidka made a power-point presentation on the activities of the CSA over the last one year. Without too much of hype or fanfare, the Chandigarh Sahitya Akademi has been doing its job, bringing people and minds together in get-togethers that are stimulating and enriching. An illustrated Brochure summing up the year-long activities was released by the Mayor, Anu Chatrath, who presided over today’s event.

In the coming year the CSA has elaborate plans to hold top level activities including a National Seminar in November 2010 and the 2nd Chandigarh LitFest in January 2011.

Following the annual report was a Hasya Kavi Sammelan that kept the audience in splits. The participating poets were Dilbar (from Sirsa), Yogendra maudgil (from Panipat), Virendra Madhur (from Rohtak), Master Mahendre (from Jhajjar), Sufi Jagjit Singh (from Ambala) and TN Raaz (local). Laughter seems to be the best medicine to drive away the summer blues!

On this occasion awards were also presented to some budding writers who had competed in Creative Writing Competitions held by the CSA. Abhilasha (DAV Public School, Sector-8), Ankita Sethi (Mount Carmel School, Sector-47), Charmi Sahni (Shivalik Public School, Sector-41), Ashita Singla (St.Joseph Sr.Sec.School, Sector-44-D), and Pooja (Shri Guru Harkishan School, Sector-38), were given prizes.

Today’s function was a special one well-attended by intellectuals and writers of the city who were all praise for the achievements of the CSA which is headed by Prof Manju Jaidka, ably supported by Madhav Kaushik (Secretary) and D.S. Gupt (Vice-Chairman).
